I’m Hangin now has Local Channels! What does this mean?

1. We have created a handful of Twitter accounts for local areas, such as New York (@imhangin_ny) or San Francisco (@imhangin_sf).

2. If your event public (you would like a bunch of people to show up) and is located in one of these areas, we now offer to retweet the event name and url on the twitter account for your area.

3. People in these areas should follow these accounts to hear about fun things to do!

Why?

If you’re an active twitter user, we thought it would be cool and helpful to build these local channels to funnel event data to you.

We’ve been slowly working towards a second release… and it’s here. While we haven’t knocked out *all* of the features we wanted, we feel like the service is becoming a lot easier to use and a lot more secure.

What’s here:

1. OAuth - You securely “add” the app to your twitter account, and you  never need to fumble precious passwords. This is a lot more secure, and only adds two simple mouse clicks to the hang creation flow. This is the most important change. We will eventually open-source our oauth implementation… there’s some good abstraction in there.

2. Setting a time (as well as a date) - Choose “some other time” and there’s a drop down to select exactly what time you’d like to meet up.

3. Owners can add an unlimited number of comments - Did you forget something? Do you want to add some extra data or a link to your hang? Now you can.

There are a bunch of other minor details. Please respond here or e-mail us if you have any trouble with oauth. We left the traditional login in the system because twitter’s oauth implementation seems slightly buggy. We’re going to try to iterate a bit faster. Also, we know about the front-end issues in IE. These will be fixed ASAP.

We are set to break one thousand users in our first three days… with out ANY promotions! Don’t panic it’s organic…. organic growth, that is. Thank you all for the hangs!

More importantly, Ben and I would like to thank each of you all who gave us feedback… we’re working on a bunch of new stuff:

1. Security: Oauth has been rolled out to all apps, and we will implement ASAP
2. Private hangs: we will close a hang’s meta data and response form to your followers (or people you are following?) I’m inclined to say followers just so that if you have a locked twitter account, your followers are people you have approved.
3. Mapping preview: If you mistype an address, you’ll want to see it before a hang is finalized.
4. Owner can respond more than once! So, if you tweet a hang automatically, we have been assuming that you are attending your hang, that’s why owners default to “Yes!”. However, the response box is a good place to add extra info, so owners should be able to add bit.ly-esque urls here.
5. Addison has offered to help us fix the design issues, and we’re going to make a non-JS non-graphic intensive version for our iPhones and other mobile devices.

We have released our first version of imhang.in! Check out our cool design, basic hang creation and publishing.

Right now we have some issues with bad geocoding, but we will change over to another service momentarily and maps should be more accurate.

Other than that the feedback has been great so far and thank you for all the hangs!
